Give Dina her freedom from Auschwitz now!

The time has come for the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum to return to my mother her watercolor portraits of gypsies. Dinah Gottliebova Babbitt has an aggressive form of cancer and may not survive surgery. I pray that the Museum will not allow the suffering she endured from having been incarcerated at Auschwitz to continue to her grave.

In addition to Dina's other horrible experiences at the Auschwitz Death Camp, she was forced to paint and draw many of the awful experiments of Dr. Josef Mengele, the notorious Angel of Death, in order to survive and ensure the survival of her mother.

For years, Dina and we, her family, have been working to secure her ability to possess the gypsy paintings that she created before she passes from this world. Whether the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum chooses to recognize it or not, Dina -- not the Musem -- is the rightful owner of her works. She must sign paperwork in order for the paintings to be published or re-used by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum . She has always signed these papers without seeking the monetary compensation to which she is entitled and, instead, has only sought to have any monies earned go to the Roma or gypsy people. Please note that she has never sought to have returned to her the many other sketches and artistic works that she created while imprisoned at Auschwitz that were left at the Death Camp site . The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum has displayed, republished, and otherwise used these other works for many years, and we encourage it to do so.

By the Museum's own admission on its website, the gypsy portraits were purchased from people who apparently did not realize that they were selling to the Museum property belonging to someone who was still alive, property that was not legally theirs to sell. International case law now shows that buying and possessing stolen artwork does not entitle the possessor to keep it; it is the property of the rightful owner.

I also pray that the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum will not put us in a position that necessitates the family's continued efforts to get the portraits returned for many more years to come, including after Dina's death. We pray that the Museum will let us all have the peace that we deserve.

We encourage the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum to continue to display the fine copies of Dina's gypsy portraits. However, the originals must now be returned to the owner, Dina (aka Dinah) Gottliebova Babbitt, immediately.

Sincerely and with appreciation,

Michele Babbitt Kane and Karin Babbitt
